CAMBRIDGE 2006
AAAARGGGHHHHH
It's early May 2006 and I just noticed I haven't updated the Cambridge page since 2004.
2004 was a good year, to be sure; enjoyable set on Stage Two, and a record 2 hrs 45 mins open air show
on Sunday night. This record will not be attempted again. Honestly. Nearly 3 hours without a PA.
I enjoyed it. But 165 minutes???
2006 will be chilled out. The council booked me to busk the ticket queue, which I did on the
Bank Holiday Monday. Thanks to the people who put money in the hat; not necessary, because the
council paid me, and so it's going to charity.
But the queue was a heartbreaking gig, and not because people's minds were on the queue and not
me. That's what I'd expect, especially at 10 am on a Sunday. No; I was amazed at the sheer length of the queue
and the slowness with which it moved. I didn't really get to the back until about 3 pm, and it's
amazing that people had to queue for over 8 hours to get served.
And yet, what else can be done? I thought: web booking. But as they rightly point out,
that just plays into the hands of touts. What is great about CFF is that people come back and back
again. It would be different with a crowd of people who didn't know each other and who just came for the acts.
Queuing this way keeps it in the family and keeps the spivs away. But: more than 8 hours???
That's a terrible time to stand in a queue. I couldn't have stood it.
And the Corn Exchange was closed. Last year, they sold coffee from trollies, which would have helped.
This year, zilch. They could have made a fortune.
But July will make it all worthwhile for everybody, I hope.
There are three nice photosets of me in action at Cambridge 2004 and 2005 here;
thanks to Shaun Esgate, George Crawford and Neil King.
Hope to see everybody in July. I am on no bills this year; just hanging around, as they say.

what the Fatea web site had to say in 1997, complete with ghastly photograph
taken leaning on club tent.
A brief but flattering mention at Janet McKnight's page.
A Cambridge interview at FATEA's site.
Another mention and pic in the blue striped shirt at another part of FATEA's site (1997).
A link to my site on a page otherwise dedicated to toast.
Nothing to do with Cambrige, but it's in German.
There was some other stuff, notably a review by Chris Marling, but it seems to have disappeared. And there's
some flattering stuff by Rychard Carrington in Rock n Reel, but that
seems not to be on the net at all.
